The road of 1000 Kasbahs and Sahara
A journey through the Route of 1000 Kasbahs and the Moroccan desert is a fascinating adventure full of scenic beauty and cultural diversity. From Marrakech, the route leads through the majestic Atlas Mountains, passing historic villages and kasbahs. The landscape changes from hills to vast plains before reaching the Sahara Desert. A highlight is an overnight stay in a Berber camp with stories and traditional music. The journey ends in Marrakech, where you can explore the city’s rich history.
Upon arrival at the airport, you will be met by your driver, who will transfer you to your Riad located in the heart of the Medina.Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to enjoy some preliminary sightseeing. Â
After breakfast, you will travel toward Ouarzazate via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Known as the "Gateway to the Desert" and the "Hollywood of Morocco," Ouarzazate has hosted films like Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. Along the way, you’ll pass the Timnit Kasbah, typically viewed from the outside, and visit the Amridil Kasbah, renowned for its elegant architecture and views of the palm grove.
After breakfast, you will depart from Skoura, passing through the Valley of Roses with an optional visit to a rose cooperative to learn about rose cultivation and its uses. You may also choose to travel via Bou Tharar for a glimpse into traditional Berber life. The journey continues along a scenic 12 km track into the Dadès Gorge, known for its unique "monkey feet" rock formations, with time for a short walk to enjoy the landscape. You will then proceed to Tineghir to visit the Ikelane Mosque and its Medersa in the Ksar of Afanour—open to non-Muslims, including the ablution and prayer halls. Overnight stay in the area. Â
After breakfast, you'll take a detour to the impressive Todra Gorge. Afterwards, you'll travel to Tinjdad to visit the El-Khorbat Museum. This lovingly designed museum features extraordinary exhibits that convey the everyday life and culture of the Berbers, but also skillfully illustrates the architectural features of the kasbahs. Here, you'll take a short break and enjoy a leisurely lunch. Afterwards, the journey continues to Zagora, where you'll make a symbolic stop in front of the famous plaque "Timbuktu, 52 Days." This is the last vestige of a time when Zagora was an important transit point for caravans. Back then, caravans traveled from here laden with salt, spices, and leather goods to sub- Saharan Africa, returning from there with gold, ivory, and slaves. Â
Traveling by off road vehicle, you will follow the historic caravan route from the Draa Valley toward Timbuktu. En route, visit an ancient library and pottery workshop in Tamegroute. As you cross the Hammada du Draa, take time to absorb the stark beauty of the desert landscape. Enjoy a picnic in the open air near M’Hamid before continuing through stone plains and dunes to reach Erg Chegaga—the largest and most remote sand desert in Morocco. Later, a dromedary ride will take you to a high dune, where you can witness a breathtaking desert sunset. Â
In the morning, you will continue toward the Fint Oasis, traveling between Erg Chegaga and the Draa Valley, passing through the dry Lake Iriki—now a salt plain known for its striking mirages. From Foum Zguid, the journey continues along a scenic country road through the stone desert and rugged mountain landscapes to Taznakht, known for its carpet cooperatives. Your day concludes in Ait Ben Haddou, a stunning village of reddish-brown mud-brick architecture. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, it features one of North Africa’s most remarkable kasbahs and has served as the backdrop for numerous Hollywood films. Â
After breakfast, you will return to Marrakech, with a final stop to visit the last kasbah of your journey. Though modest from the outside, its interior reveals vibrant tiles, intricate stucco work, and beautifully crafted iron grilles, all set against a stunning mountain backdrop. This and the other kasbahs visited were built by a former foundling who rose to become the Pasha of Marrakech. A proud Berber, he aimed to preserve his heritage, aligning with the French protectorate—leading to the neglect of his buildings after independence. Your journey concludes in Marrakech, where you can relax and reflect on the rich history and culture experienced along the way. Â
Following breakfast, you will begin your guided local tour to explore the enchanting city of Marrakech. Your visit will include the renowned Koutoubia Mosque and the vibrant traditional market (souk).
