Four royal cities and the road of 1000 Kasbahs with desert experience 11-days round trip
A journey to the Orient and into Morocco’s mysterious past, to places where time seems to have stood
still for centuries. Where you can find everything, you lack as a person from the North. Or as King
Mohammed VI put it: “For the West, Morocco is the
Orient, and for the Orientals, it is the West.”
Your driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your riad in the Medina. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to take some initial sightseeing.
After breakfast, the city guide will show you the most important sights of the Medina: the Koutubia Mosque, the huge “Jemaa el Fna” square, the colorful, lively souks with their oriental scents and the “Bab Agnaou”, the most beautiful gate in Marrakech, as well as the Bahia Palace. The rest of the afternoon is yours. You can explore further on your own, for example, the famous gardens, or relax in a traditional hammam. Afterwards, soak up your impressions at a typical Moroccan restaurant in the medina.
After breakfast, your tour begins and travels through the country's largest city, Casablanca. Here, you'll visit the famous Hassan II Mosque (interior tour). Your journey continues to Rabat, the capital of Morocco. There, you'll visit the gardens of the Royal Palace, the Kasbah Challa, one of the most important buildings of the Almohad period, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V with its imposing Hassan Tower. Visit the medina with its winding alleys, beautiful studded wooden doors, and terraces overlooking the Bouregreg River.
Today you leave the coast and travel to Meknes. The city lies on a fertile plateau and is known for its 40 km long city wall with its magnificent city gates, as well as its beautiful, authentic souks. Here you will visit the medina with arguably the most beautiful gate in Morocco. the "Bab El Mansour". It goes to the Mellah, the Jewish quarter. The former royal Moulay Ismail's stables and the old granary impress with their well-thought-out architecture. Afterwards, you'll travel to the Roman city of Volubilis, whose ruins you'll explore in detail. On the way to Fez, you'll see the pilgrimage site of Moulay Idriss in the opposite hills, its outline reminiscent of a dromedary. The journey then continues to the oldest of the imperial cities, Fez.
After a leisurely breakfast, your city tour begins. First, you will drive to the “Castle of South," where you have an unforgettable panoramic view of the old town. It is a World Heritage Site under UNESCO protection. Through the beautifully decorated gate “Bab Boujelou” you enter the the best-preserved old town district of Morocco and visit the Koran school “Bou Inania”, the tomb of Moulay Idriss and the Kairouine Mosque, as well as the oldest university in the world. You will see the colorful souks, the merchant and artisan alleys of the coppersmiths, tanners, Tailors, chasers and pottery. At the end of the tour, you can relax in an authentic café Enjoy a fresh peppermint tea Moroccan style.
After breakfast, you'll leave oriental Fez and head south. Passing Ifran, the ski resort and the "Switzerland" of Morocco, you'll continue through the scenic Middle Atlas with its cedar forests. A short walk in the surrounding area is possible today. With a bit of luck, you'll encounter some Barbary macaques in their mustard-yellow fur, not shy at all, begging for a few peanuts. Towards the afternoon, you'll reach the apple town of Midelt. Overnight:
After breakfast we head through the Ziz Gorges, a bizarre canyon with oases and date palms. You'll travel via the oasis town of Erfoud to Merzouga. This small desert oasis is surrounded by the red-gold dunes of the Erg Chebbi. Here, you can take a short break. Afterwards, you'll ride a dromedary into the depths of the Sahara to the desert camp. On top of a high dune, you'll enjoy the magical sunset.
If you want to experience the magical moment of sunrise today, you'll have to get up early. After breakfast outdoors in the mild morning sun, you can either ride back to Merzouga by camel or drive in an off-road vehicle. From Merzouga, you'll travel via Rissani, the former capital of the Tafilalt. Finally, you'll reach Tineghir, where the Todra Valley begins. You'll drive up to the imposing Todra Gorge.
After breakfast, you leave Tineghir and cross the Dadès Valley. The road runs along the Dadès River and is lined with beautiful oasis villages, date palms, and numerous kasbahs. The journey continues along the famous "Road of 1000 Kasbahs," where you'll discover the oasis of El Kala M'Gouna in the Rose Valley. In the afternoon, you'll reach Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood" of Morocco. Numerous international films, such as "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Gladiator," were filmed here.
After breakfast, on the way to Marrakech, you'll visit the village of Ait Ben Haddou, home to one of the most magnificent kasbahs in North Africa: a beautiful example of traditional Berber mud-brick architecture. The journey continues along one of Morocco's most beautiful routes. You'll cross the Atlas Pass – Tizin-Tichka (2260 m). With a few breaks at some of the most beautiful viewpoints, you'll reach Marrakech, the "Pearl of the South," in the afternoon. The remaining time is at your own discretion.
