Sahara Trekking

We set off early in the morning and drive toward the bright, snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas. Our journey continues over the Anti-Atlas Mountains down into the impressive Drâa Valley, where the mostly dry Drâa River has carved its way spectacularly through the wild, dry, rocky desert. There is very little vegetation, except for a few acacia and tamari trees that defy the sand and heat.

Today, we're going on a camel trek! We'll meet our escort team and load our luggage, provisions, and camping gear onto the camels. On the rocking backs of our desert vehicles, we'll ride or hike through the rocky and flat surroundings of M'Hamid. The dry crust of the soil crumbles with a crackling sound beneath your footsteps. Enjoy the tranquility and vastness of this fantastic oasis landscape nestled between dunes in the middle of nowhere.

We ride our camels into the heart of the Sahara, stroll across vast dunes, and experience the magical atmosphere of the surreal desert landscape. We picnic in the shade of scattered tamari trees in the dunes. Occasionally, the sand-covered ruins of old villages become visible, testaments to a time when the area was still fertile. White, barely noticeable bone fragments indicate former cemeteries. The sand has made all of this disappear and is only reluctant to reveal it again. We continue hiking to our overnight camp. After setting up and arranging our tents, the climb up the highest dune (Erg Ezzahar) beckons, where we can marvel at an unforgettable play of colors in the evening light

On an easy hike through the golden dune landscape, we cross the dried-up riverbed of the Wadi Drâa, which, after heavy but rare rainfall, can become Morocco's longest river. Now, there are almost no stones and even less vegetation. Here and there, a tuft of grass lingers among the imposing dunes. In the evening, we relax around the warming fire, bake bread together in the sand, and are treated to a delicious Moroccan dinner by our cook.

At the caravan's pace, we hike to the vast dune field of Erg Chegaga. The path leads through sand desert, sometimes through rocky desert. With a bit of luck, we'll pass a well where camels are being watered. Here you can refresh yourself. In the afternoon, you'll reach to the "Happy Dune." Finally, our caravan arrives at the campsite. Don't miss the spectacular spectacle of a desert sunset! The desert stretches out before you like a golden ocean of sand. As the last rays of sun disappear, the stars make their appearance. At dusk, we return to camp, where dinner awaits.

After a Berber breakfast, we begin our final stage of the hike, a three-hour walk. Afterwards, we bid farewell to our escort team and the camels. We leave the desert in an off-road vehicle and drive through a plain covered in arugula, often dotted with dromedaries, and cross the spectacular Lake Iriki. Fata Morganas form on the horizon. We travel via Foum Zguid to Taznakht. The town is known for its intricate Berber carpets and beautiful weaving. We then reach the village of Ait Ben Haddou, where you can visit one of the most magnificent kasbahs in Morocco. With its reddish-brown mud walls, it is a beautiful example of traditional Berber architecture and has served as a backdrop for many Hollywood films.

After breakfast, we return to Marrakech. The journey takes you over one of the great Atlas passes – Tizin-Tichka (2260 m). You can stop at the most beautiful viewpoints and stretch your legs. You'll reach Marrakech in the afternoon. You can reflect on the day's impressions in a typical Moroccan restaurant in the medina.
