The High Atlas, Desert and South 11-day round trip
On this trip, you’ll discover Morocco in all its facets. The route takes you through the mountainous landscapes of the High Atlas, through the golden deserts with spectacular dunes, and toward the Atlantic coast. Just as these andscapes blend together, so do the Arab and Berbercultures. The diverse Moroccan cuisine will tempt you.
Your driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your riad in the Medina. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to take some initial sightseeing. Overnight: Riad & Spa Bahia Salam or similar.
After breakfast, your guide will show you the Medina's most important sights: the Koutubia Mosque, the vast Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the colorful, lively souks with their oriental scents, the Bab Agnaou, Marrakech's most beautiful gate, and the Bahia Palace. The rest of the afternoon is yours. You can explore further on your own, for example, by visiting the famous gardens, or relax in a traditional hammam. Afterwards, savor your impressions in a typical Moroccan restaurant in the Medina. Overnight: Riad & Spa Bahia Salam or similar (B/D)
Today, your journey continues to Ouarzazate, taking you along one of Morocco's most scenic routes. You'll drive over one of the great Atlas passes, the Tizin-Tichka (2260 m), and then reach the village of Ait Ben Haddou, where you'll visit one of the most magnificent kasbahs in Morocco. With its reddish-brown mud walls, it's a beautiful example of traditional Berber architecture and has served as a backdrop for many Hollywood films. Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "Gateway to the Desert," fascinates with its diverse and contrasting landscape: countless clay kasbahs, mountains, and dry plains alternate. Valleys and green oases, palm groves, and villages of reddish-brown earth make up the region's charm. Overnight: Riad Dar Chamaa or similar (B/D)
You continue your journey to Tinerhir along the Dadès River. The road is lined with traditional oasis villages, date palms, and numerous kasbahs. The journey continues along the famous "Road of 1000 Kasbahs," where you discover the oasis of El Kala M'Gouna in the Rose Valley. You reach Tinerhir in the afternoon. The area offers opportunities for short hikes. Overnight: Hotel Tomboctou or similar (B/D)
After breakfast we continue towards the Sahara and caravan station via Alnif. In Alnif there is the possibility to take a break. Afterwards the journey continues to Zagora, the The largest town in the Draa Valley. You'll make a symbolic stop in front of the famous plaque "Timbuktu 52 Days." This is the last relic of a time when Zagora was an important transit point for caravans. Back then, caravans left here laden with salt, spices, and leather goods for sub-Saharan Africa, returning from there with gold, ivory, and slaves. Overnight: Riad Lamane or similar (B/D)
By Jeep 4x4 car, you'll travel along the old road that led the caravans from Draa to Timbuktu. On the drive through the Hammada du Draa, you can take your time to absorb this new landscape. In M'Hamid, you can enjoy a picnic in the open air. You will cross the stone desert and dunes to Erg Chegaga, the largest and least visited sand desert in Morocco. Afterwards, you will ride on a dromedary to explore the magical sunset on a high dune. Overnight: Comfort nomad tent (B/L/D)
You'll drive along the Paris-Dakar Rally track to Lake Iriki. This once vast lake has now become a completely dried-up salt flat, but is now known for its fantastic mirages. Your very own mirage awaits you. From Foum Zguid, you continue on the N12 highway, accompanied by the vast stone desert with its bizarrely shaped mountain ranges. In the afternoon, you'll reach Tata. This oasis town is surrounded by well-tended vegetable gardens and shady palm groves.
Today's journey takes you into the Anti-Atlas Mountains and deep into the Berber culture of Tafraoute. Nature has carved a magnificent mountain landscape here with astonishing cliffs of gray granite that shimmer pink in the sun. The area surrounding Tafraoute offers many interesting opportunities for short hikes into the magnificent mountain landscape. Various festivals throughout the year offer variety in this otherwise isolated town. Overnight: el malara or similar (B/D)
From Tafraoute, the journey continues along the Atlantic coast to Agadir, where a short detour is worthwhile. You'll drive to the city's "Agadir Ofla" viewpoint, from which you'll have a wonderful view of the city, the beach, and the harbor. If you like, you can take a lunch break here. Afterwards, you'll continue along the Atlantic coast past fishing villages and surf camps toward Essaouira.
Essaouira, the "Well-Drawn," is a city with the only medina that was drawn before its construction. After a hearty breakfast, explore the city: the harbor, the Sqala, the old town, and the Mellah, the former Jewish quarter. Explore Essaouira as you please. There are many ways to relax: lie on the sandy beach, ride a camel, or recharge your batteries in a hammam or thalassotherapy spa. The lively medina invites you to linger with its cozy restaurants, bustling alleys, idyllic squares, and colorful shops. End the day with grilled fish at a barbecue stand by the harbor. Overnight: Riad Mimouna or similar (B)
After so much relaxation, your trip ends here if you don't wish to extend your stay. YOUR MOROCCO wishes you: Ar tawalt ad'nin - see you next time! (F
